About Me

I’m an independent consultant working in DevOps and web development.

On the DevOps side of things I specialise in Amazon Web Services and Linux.

For web development, I use Ruby on Rails.

If you have a project that touches any of my specialisations, and you would like to work with me, then there are a few things that you should know before getting in touch.

What My Clients Say About Me

My Approach To Work

Incremental Problem-Solving

Too many technology projects fail when we bite off more than we can chew. Software projects are complex, and their complexity increases with each feature that is being implemented. In order to avoid burgeoning complexity, I think it important to keep the scope of work limited to what we can hold in our mouths minds at one time.

In order to do this, I will work with you to identify smaller, concrete parts of your bigger problem, and together we'll work to implement a solution to that problem in a short time span. For example, instead of building a system to replace half a dozen manual processes, we will start by replacing one or two key processes to validate our solution. Once we have successfully implemented a solution to a part of the problem, we will gradually expand the solution until we have fully addressed the problem.

Remote Work

I’m a fully remote worker. I enjoy meeting my clients, when possible. However, if you require someone to work from your offices I am not the right fit for that particular role.

I have been working remotely for almost ten years, so I am a seasoned remote worker who will blend in with existing remote teams. Or if your organisation is new to remote work, I can help you get off to a good start by sharing what has worked for me.

Outcome-Oriented

My relationships with my clients are all based on the value that I deliver, not the hours that I work or when I work.

I work on retainer with defined goals and outcomes. It is up to me to find the most efficient way to get the work done. The value of retainer will be defined by the scope of work and your budget.

Deep Work

As a knowledge worker, my ability to focus is essential to doing creative and valuable work. In order to ensure that I can spend time focused on building solutions, I allocate chunks of my day for undisturbed work. During these periods, I do not respond to emails and messages, nor take phone calls. In fact, all applications on my computer and my mobile phone are closed and notifications disabled.

Although most communication will be asynchronous, this does not mean that I will be entirely inaccessible. I have set times throughout the day when I check messages and return calls. Additionally, we will work together to establish an agreed timeline for feedback and updates. If you need to meet with me, you will have a readily accessible link to my calendar where you can easily schedule a meeting.
